This is an E-C translation project report on the translation of Chapter 2 to Chapter 3 of Dissociation of a Personality: A Biographical Study in Abnormal Psychology, written by Morton Prince,an American psychologist and neurologist. The book gives an account of how Dr.Prince treated Miss Beauchamp(assumed name)suffering from Dissociative Identity Disorder with hypnosis.Dr.Prince demonstrates not only the developments of personalities of the patient but also the behavior mode of each of them in daily life as well as the psychological relations between them and normal self.Besides, childhood experience and family heredity are added to find out the cause behind the mental disease.Dr.Prince explains some patient's psychological phenomena based on the previous treatment cases. All these provide a new method and reliable basis for the treatment of Dissociative Identity Disorder, and reader interested in psychology could benefit a lot from the book as well. The text translated in the project belongs to informative text.Under Christiane Nord's theory of text analysis in translation, the translator analyzes the project and concludes that the translation must meet two requirements: first, information should be accurately conveyed, second, translation should be readable for the reader to understand the author's intention. The difficulties translator come across in translation can be mainly divided into two parts:words translation under specific context and long complex sentences. The latter one is ascribed to understanding obstacles brought about by the lack of background knowledge and complicated grammar structure. Therefore, the translator, directed by Nord's Function Plus Loyalty Theory, chooses Instrumental Translation as translating strategy and applies some practicable translating techniques in order to overcome difficulties. The translator divides difficulties appearing in the process of translation into following types:extension and flexible translation of word, translation involving background knowledge, translation of long and complex sentences, textual cohesion and reproduction of dialogue style as well.Through this translation practice, the translator believes that a translator should be both all-rounder and specialist. The former means that translator should be involved in translation practice of various kinds in many fields so as to accumulate background knowledge andimprove translating skills in these fields. The latter means that translator should determine a key field and be targeted to enhance the understanding ability and translation skills of the text in that field.Besides, appropriated theory of translation ought to be selected according to different types of text. The translator hopes that the translation project report can serves as inspiration for other translator on translating informative text.
