Military Non-fiction Translation Report Of Citizen Soldiers (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Text Typology Theory

Compared with the official war history,military non-fiction has the characteristics of being easy to understand and more acceptable by readers.In recent years,with a large number of foreign war movies and TV series coming out in China,people show more interest in studying the history of war.Under this circumstance,more and more foreign war documentary literature were introduced to the Chinese readers.However,domestic translation studies related to it are rare.The book,Citizen Soldiers,is written by American famous historian,Stephen Edward Ambrose.Based on the historical facts,he vividly narrates how American army fought against German troops in the European Theater during WWII.The translation of a few chapters in the book has been completed,which will provide readers with an all-round perspective on inspecting the Battle of Normandy.The translation project is under the guidance of Reiss?s Text Typology Theory.In Citizen Soldiers,the text which introduces the historical facts and the proceeding of battles belongs to the informative text.With well-organized structure and clear logical connections,it focuses on explaining the military information to the readers.Besides,in order to build an authentic and cruel war atmosphere,the book also contains the text that depicts the frontline battle through the vivid description of battlefield environment and soldiers? reaction,which belongs to the expressive text.For the translation analysis of the informative text,military terms,long and complicated sentences,passive sentences and coherence will be taken into consideration from the lexical,syntactic and textual level respectively.For the translation analysis of the expressive text,the translation of rhetorical devices and how to make target text more expressive will be analyzed.This translation project aims to provide methods,strategies and techniques for the English-Chinese translation of military non-fiction under the Text Typology Theory.
