A Report On The E-C Translation Of Music Reviews On Pitchfork

This article is an English-Chinese translation practice report based on the music reviews from Pitchfork,a music website.Since the album discussed in each article is different from each other,the content with different focus is not alike as well.In addition,since these music review articles are written by different authors,each article has its own style.In the process of translation,the translator was guided by Nida's functional equivalence theory,solving different problems unique to music review text translation.This theory,with its four principles of equivalence at lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic levels,emphasizes more on meaning than on form.Therefore,instead of rigidly adhering to the source text,the translator only needs to “naturally” reproduce the original meaning into translation.In that sense,the equivalence theory does have a strong guiding role in the translation of the review text.In the report,based on the characteristics of the original language and the corresponding translation ideas,the translator illustrates and analysis examples to reflect how the functional equivalence theory is contained in target text.At the same time,the report also includes the thoughts of translators.Before translating,a translator must understand the language characteristics and difficulties.During translation,when the source text and the target text fail to achieve equivalence due to language differences,priority should be given to meaning.Finally,the translator puts forward some thoughts on this field of translation based on this practice.
