Emotional understanding is an important aspect of children’s social development,which can help children understand the emotions of others and get along with others better.In childhood,the development of emotional understanding is important.And in this period,the family environment has a great influence on the development of children’s emotional understanding.When the two child policy is implementation,the family have a new brother or sister.The birth of younger brothers and sisters makes the first-born children face sibling relationship,but the quality of sibling relationship will have different effects on the emotional understanding ability of first-born children.Therefore,this study aims to explore the development characteristics of first-born children’s emotional understanding in two-child families and further explore the influence of sibling relationship on first-born children’s emotional understanding.Study 1:the story were used in sample of 358 primary school students to explore the the development characteristics of the first-born children’s emotion understanding by comparing the ability of emotional understanding of first-born children with that of the only child.the results showed:1,On the whole,the recognition of facial expressions and the dimension of wish-based emotional understanding,the development level of emotional understanding of first-born children is higher than that of the only child.2,On the whole,the development level of first-born children in grade three and grade five is higher than that of first-born children in grade one,but in the dimension of understanding moral emotions,the development level of first-born children in grade one is higher than that of first-born children in grade five.Study 2:A sibling relationship questionnaire was issued to 143 first-born children in study 1 and filled out by their mother to explore the influence sibling relationship on first-born children’s emotional understanding.The results showed:1,The score of first-born children in sibling conflict dimension has grade difference,which shows that the degree of conflict between fifth graders was higher than that between third graders.There is no grade difference in other dimensions of sibling relationship.There were no gender differences in any of the dimensions of sibling relationships2,In the first grade,parental preference had a significant positive predictive effect on first-born children’s ability of understand emotions.In the third grade,sibling conflict has a significant negative predictive effect on first-born children’s ability of understand emotions,while parental preference has a significant positive predictive effect on first-born children’s ability of understand emotions.In the fifth grade,sibling conflict had a significant negative predictive effect on first-born children’s ability of understand emotions.Conclusions of this study are as follows:(1)On the whole,the level of emotional understanding development of first-born children is higher than that of the only child,and the level of emotional understanding development of first-born children gradually improves with the increase of grade.(2)The score of first-born children in sibling conflict dimension has grade difference,which shows that the degree of conflict between fifth graders was higher than that between third graders.And conflict between siblings in third grade and fifth grade has a negative predictive effect on first-born children’s emotional understanding.The negative predictive effect of sibling conflict on first-born children’s emotional understanding in fifth grade was higher than that in third grade.
