A Report On The Translation Of The Handbook Of Translation And Cognition(Chapter 1-2)

The translation report is based on the translation of Chapter 1 and 2 of The Handbook of Translation and Cognition edited by John W.Schwieter and Aline Ferreira.This book taps the process of translation and interpreting from the perspective of cognitive science,which exercises influence on empirical translation process research.In light of Nida‘s Functional Equivalence Theory,the four basic requirements of a translation,namely,?making sense?,?conveying the spirit and manner of the original?,?having a natural and easy form of expression? and ?producing a similar response? function as the guiding principles for this translation practice.Through typical case analysis,the author has summarized related translation techniques for terminology,appositive clause and style.For terminology translation,the translator can adopt standardized translation,select context-consistent translation or employ suitable translation plus the source term.When rendering an appositive clause,the translator can translate it into an attributive,convert the head word,translate it into a sentence or omit the head word.For style transfer,the translator should attempt to use Chinese four-character words,retain clear and logical structure as well as maintain normativity and convenience for in-text citations.Through this translation practice,the author realized that an in-depth and thorough understanding of the source text,the application of translation theory into translation practice and the combination of self-proofreading and proofreading by others are indispensible for a high-quality translation.It is hoped that the author‘s experience learnt from this practice will be conducive to future translation of academic texts.
