This paper,based on the translation of Chapter Five of Patent Inventions: Intellectual Property and the Victorian Novel written by Professor Clare Pettitt from King's College London,is a translation report.The source text restores and recurs the establishment and development of the intellectual property rights in Victorian period of England,which belongs to the research field of law and literature.Due to a quantitiy of cultural defaults in the source text,the target readers will suffer the cultural shock if the cultural defaults are not properly compensated.Therefore,under the guidance of the theory of Wang Dalai,the author aims at exploring how to compensate the cultural defaults in the text related to law and literature on the basis of the invisible cultural factors in the cultural defaults.This report consists of four parts.The first part is the introduction,which sketches the background,objectives and significance of the report.The second part is the pre-translation preparation,which introduces and anaylzes the source text from two aspects: law and literature and cultural default.It also specifies the difficulty of this report.The third part starts with the theory of Wang Dalai and seeks the compensation strategies of cultural defaults by using the cultural factors hidden in the cultural defaults as criteria.The fourth part is the conclusion,which summarizes the translation experience and the problems to be solved.
