A Report On Commentary Interpreting Of Shenyang Railway Exhibition Gallery

This report is written based on a commentary interpreting practice.On June 30^th,2019,members of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China Shenyang Chapter were invited to visit Shenyang Railway Exhibition Gallery to experience the historical and cultural changes of Shenyang.The author was fortunate enough to have the honor to provide Chinese-English consecutive interpreting for them for about an hour.The interpreting practice content mainly involves the information of Shenyang Railway Exhibition Gallery,the history and culture of Shenyang Railway as well as the locomotives’types and functions.And the interpreter is required to have a good mastery of cultural and historical background knowledge and railway related terminologies.Gile believes that the human brain has limited attention resources.Once the cognitive load exceeds the limits of the human brain,the interpreter might make cognitive errors and attention misallocation in interpreting,which will result in omissions or errors eventually.In this practice,high-density information appears frequently in Chinese commentary,which increases the difficulty of interpreting in three aspects:long sentences with detailed content or complex structures,intensive terms and numbers.Based on Gile’s Effort Models,the author adopts the following three strategies for the cognitive problems mainly caused by high-density information:simplification,prediction and note-taking.Simplification and anticipation are aimed at solving the difficulty of long sentences with detailed content or complex structures,and save the author’s energy in Production Effort and Memory Effort,respectively.Note-taking as a preventive tactic reducing the load of the two Efforts of Production and Memory deals with intensive terms and numbers.The application of three interpreting strategies alleviates the author’s cognitive load caused by high-density information in the process of CI,thereby reducing the occurrences of errors or omissions,and promoting a successful completion of the interpreting practice.In addition,the author also makes reflections and suggestions on the shortcomings of the interpreting practice and report writing.
