A Mock Interpreting Practice Report On 2022 PBCSF Global Finance Forum

This report is based on the interpreter’s mock Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting practice.The material is selected from the second plenary session of 2022 PBCSF Global Finance Forum,and its duration is one hour.Within limited time,five speakers deliver speeches with the focus on the current situation and future trends of green finance development,resulting in high information density of source language.After consulting references,the interpreter divides high-density information in the practice into three categories: enumeration,premodifier and intensive terminologies.According to Gile’s Effort Model,efforts are divided into the Listening and Analysis Effort,the Short-term Memory Effort,the Speech Production Effort and the Coordination Effort in the process of simultaneous interpreting.Each of these operations requires a certain amount of processing capacity.Due to the immediacy of simultaneous interpreting,when high-density information appears,the processing capacity requirements for each task will be increased,which easily leads to unbalanced effort allocation and affects the quality of interpreting.Based on the Model,three coping strategies are adopted: omission,segmentation and simplification.In detail,omission is applied to deal with enumeration,which can simultaneously reduce the processing capacity requirements for listening and analysis,short-term memory and speech production;segmentation is employed to manage premodifier,decreasing the processing capacity requirements for short-term memory;simplification is utilized to lower the processing capacity requirements for speech production caused by intensive terminologies.Finally,the interpreter concludes that as for high-density information,strategies need to be adopted flexibly to coordinate the three efforts,ensuring the smooth completion of the task.Besides,the interpreter also finds the limitations of this report and puts forward suggestions,hoping to provide a reference for future research on high-density information interpreting strategies.
