An E-C Translation Report On Culture And Conquest In Mongol Eurasia(Chapters 2-3)

This paper is a report on translation practice.The original text is selected from Culture and Conquest in Mongol Eurasia by Thomas T.Allsen,the most famous Mongolian historian in the United States.The text consists of 23 chapters.And the selected chapters are Chapter 2 “Before the Mongols” and Chapter 3 “Formation of the il-qans,1251-1265”.The selected chapters mainly introduce the changes of the Mongol dynasty and its relations with the European countries,especially Iran.In the process of translating,there are many difficulties,including lexical difficulties,syntactic difficulties and textual difficulties.Lexical difficulties include the translation of names and places.Syntactic difficulties involve the translation of long sentences,attributive clauses and passive voices.Textual difficulties concern textual cohesion and coherence.The practice report elaborates and analyzes these translation difficulties.Given lexical difficulties,the translator mainly adopted annotation and transliteration.In view of syntactic difficulties,the translator mainly used methods of following the original order,reconstruction and voice change.As to textual difficulties,the translator utilized the method of substituting and adding logical conjunctions.Finally,on the one hand,the content of the text is novel and the text is difficult to translate.In the process of translating,the translator has improve her ability to understand the English text and to express it in Chinese.On the other hand,the translation of this work has enhanced the readers' understanding of the Mongol history in Eurasia.
