A Practice Report On Consecutive Interpreting For The Seminar On SOE Reform Guided By Communicative Translation Theory

This thesis,as a self-reflection practice report,is to explore the coping strategies in conference consecutive interpreting from the perspective of Communicative Translation theory.Based on the author's own interpreting practice for Seminar on SOE Reform for the BRI Countries,it analyzes the major difficulties confronted in conference consecutive interpreting and summarizes coping strategies adopted.It at first introduces the research background,significance,questions and structure and reviews significant previous studies of Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation theory and conference consecutive interpreting.After specifically presenting the interpreting task including its objectives and more importantly,the pre-task preparation,this report highlights the challenges posed by linguistic,cultural and contextual differences and beyond-preparation knowledge.And then through selected cases,it summarizes four major coping strategies: firstly,adding conjunctions,pronouns and nouns,etc.when encountering linguistic differences as well as adding cultural and background information to bridge the gap of understanding;secondly,generalizing idioms with local features,specific information of uncertainty and concepts which are beyond the pre-task preparation,and simplifying ultra-dense figures in case of missing more important information;thirdly,converting verbs in Chinese to nouns and prepositions in English based on the linguistic habits of word classes,and vice versa;last but not least,omitting dispensable fillers of the speaker and repetitions commonly used in Chinese.As a summary of the author's interpreting practice,this thesis is designed to contribute to current researches on coping strategies in conference consecutive interpreting by providing more practical cases.
