In 2018,the author went to the Philippines to teach Chinese for ten months.During the teaching, the author was entrusted by the local high school,Nan Sing School,to translate the Filipino textbook Chinese Culture into Chinese as a reference translation for the students to learn Chinese language. This translation practice has its special meanings. The purpose of translation is to enable foreign students to understand the differences between English and Chinese and learn how to convert English into authentic Chinese expressions.Chinese Culture mainly introduces history, geography and cultural customs of China in the way of narration and description. The language in it is accurate, practical and enlightening. However,in the process of translation, the author notices that there are a large number of long and difficult sentences in the book, which are difficult for Filipino students to understand and cause great difficulties for the translation. Therefore, the author mainly discusses how to use appropriate strategies to translate long and difficult sentences into authentic Chinese.Filipino students learn Chinese mainly for practical use,so the author believes that the textbook can't be translated word-to-word and should focus more on the semantics and its function of communication. Thus, the author chooses Newmark's communication theory as the guide for translation.Typically, the structure of long and difficult English sentence is complex and the sentence contains many meaning groups, which makes it difficult to translate. So,after dividing the meaning groups andanalyzing the sentence structure, the author summarizes the characteristics and adopts the strategies of linear translation, information reorganization translation, splitting translation and conversion translation to solve the difficulties. In addition,as the book is compiled for students, the translation should also take into account the features of textbook. Therefore, the author fully considers the abilities and needs of different students in the process of translation and strives to make the expression of the translation authentic and practical.Through the translation, the author intends to summarize the effective strategies and general principles for the translation of long and difficult sentences in textbook on the one hand, and on the other hand the author tries to combine the translation methods with the features of textbook so as to explore more appropriate translation strategies for textbook especially for those materials compiled for foreign students to learn Chinese.
