MTI Candidate: Tao Tao Supervisor: Zheng XianguiThe improvement of national cultural soft power and acceleration of cultural output are at the top of the agenda with the rapid progress of globalization and implementation of culture "Going Out" strategy.As an important part of Chinese traditional culture,the Tibetan culture has long history and contains abundant cultural connotation.In particular,an increasing number of scholars are enchanted by unique Tibetan Buddhist culture,and eager to unveil its mystery and experience its distinctive fascination.In accordance with the specific requirement of translation project,the translator selects the academic monograph Dilemma of Civilization: The Way Out for Tibetan Education(excerpt,Page 171-192)as the source text to make translation practice.The translator has carefully studied and analyzed the content that needs to be translated on the basis of comprehensive conception of source text.From the perspective of text type,this is an explanation-oriented and information-oriented text,which mainly refers to the discussion about relations between Tibetan culture and western culture,the explanation for modernization's influence upon Tibetan culture,and the description of current social phenomenon in Tibetan area.From the perspective of target readers,the main audiences are western scholars and western readers who are studying Tibetan education and interested in Chinese traditional culture.From the perspective of the purpose of translation,the translator is aimed ataccurately conveying the information of source text to target readers,and enabling them to experience and understand the cultural connotation to a great extent.According to the analysis of these three perspectives and the study of different kinds of translation theories,the translator selects the functional equivalence theory to guide the translation practice.On the other hand,in accordance with the specific problems,instructed by functional equivalence theory,the translator employs conversion,annotation,substitution,amplification and omission to address the specific problems at lexical level.In terms of syntactic level,the translation techniques such as change of voice,division and restructuring are fully used to deal with relevant problems.As for discourse level,the translator pays more attention to the coherence among sentences,and adopts the means of cohesion to embody the logic relations in the discourse.Last but not the least,the translator hopes that this translation report can provide some reference for the further relevant translation practice and translation works.
