This is a C-E translation report.The translation material is excerpted from Confusion of Civilization---the Way out for Tibetan Education,written by Professor Pabten Nyima.And the translator is responsible for Chapter 7-Chapter 8.The original text can be classified as non-literary text.Non-literary text is informative,practical,emphasizing the effectiveness of information transmission.In the process of translation,the translator should fully consider the acceptability,linguistic features,and cultural background of the target language.Not only language and formal equivalence,but smoothness,nature and accuracy in language should be taken into consideration.These requirements are compatible with Functional Equivalence.Therefore,Functional Equivalence has significance for guiding the translation.Culture-loaded words,long and complex sentences are the most difficult part in the process of translation.Since we have came to the crunch time of “the Spread of Chinese Culture Overseas Strategy”,China attaches great importance on development and cu1 ture diffusion of ethnic minority groups.Education,as a crucial carrier of culture,shows the Tibetan culture.Therefore,this translation report is of importance and necessity.After the analysis of the characteristics and significance of the original text,the author chose Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence to carry out practice and research.Translation aims to transfer the content of the original text to the target language readers,so as to achieve cultural exchange and knowledge dissemination.In the process of translation,the translator focuses on source text and translates it from readers' perspective so as to achieve an acceptable translation.The research shows that there are obvious differences between Chinese and English in terms of lexicon,syntax and text.Therefore,the author analyzes how Functional Equivalence theory guides hertranslation from three levels.First of all,on the lexical level,transliteration,explanation and annotation are applied to deal culture-loaded words,polysemic words and place name.Second of all,on the syntactic level,omission,amplification,integration division,reconstruction and conversion are used to solve long and complex sentences,short and fragment sentences and parallelism sentences.Finally,on the textual level,reference and conjunction are adopted to deal textual cohesion and coherence.This translation report is divided into four parts: the first part briefly introduces the source text,the author and its features.The second part explains the translation process.The third part outlines Eugene Nida's Functional Equivalence and translation principles.The fourth part explains the application of various translation methods and techniques in translation under the guidance of this translation theory.Finally,the author states summary and translation limitations of the translation project,which is a great help for future study and practice.
