This report is written after the translator finishes the translation of some parts in Chapter 7 of Confusion of Civilization: The Way Out for Tibetan Education guided by Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory.The book,written by Baden Nima,a famous Chinese scholar in education,is a monograph on the development of Tibetan culture and education.And it mainly introduces the Tibetan cultural basis,structure,culture and religion as well as the relationships between culture and education.Tibetan culture,as one part of the Chinese culture,enjoys extensive and profound content with a long history.Under such a background of “the Chinese Culture Going Global”,the translation of Chinese outstanding works into foreign languages plays an increasingly important role.So the translation of this book enjoys great values.The source text of this translation report is taken from three parts of the first section of Chapter Seven of this book,respectively discussing the basic connotation of education,the essential connotation of education as well as the fundamental significance of education in Tibetan areas.Based on the reading and understanding of the whole book,and after studying of the Excerpts,the translator finds that,although the three parts share the same main text type,there are still some differences in lexical,syntactic,discourse and other aspects in terms of Chinese-to-English translation.The translator analyzes and summarizes the problems in the translation process at lexical,syntactic and discourse levels in accordance with the requirements of Functional Equivalence Theory.At the lexical level,the translator adopts “amplification”,“omission” and other translation techniques to deal with the lexical problems during the translation process.At the syntactic level,the translator applies “division”,“restructure” and other translation techniques to focus on the analysis of sentence translation.At the discourse level,the translator pays more attention to the coherence and cohesion of discourse during translation process.Finally,the translator hopes that this translation practice can provide some experience and reference for translating similar texts in the future.
