In recent years,the number of foreign students studying in China has increased rapidly.According to the statistics of the Ministry of Education,in 2018,there were a total of 258,122 foreign students receiving diploma education,accounting for 52.44%of the total number of students studying in China.It is clear that basic oral communication and simple written writing can no longer meet the learning or research needs of this group.Their demand for professional research and academic activities using Chinese is increasingly prominent.Attaching importance to and strengthening the study of academic Chinese teaching for international students has become a requirement for the new situation of teaching Chinese as a foreign language,and it has also set requirements for the setting of academic Chinese courses for international students.This article mainly uses Hutchinson & Waters' demand analysis theory,and uses questionnaires and interviews to investigate the academic Chinese learning status of overseas students and the demand for academic Chinese courses.The investigation mainly involves the following three questions:First,what is the status of academic Chinese learning for international students? Second,what are the academic Chinese course requirements for international students? Third,are there any differences in the individual Chinese students' academic Chinese course requirements?Based on the analysis and discussion of the status of academic Chinese learning for foreign students and the demand for academic Chinese courses,the following conclusions were reached:First,the current Chinese courses cannot fully meet the academic Chinese needs of international students;Second,the academic Chinese curriculum needs of international students are divided into target needs and learning needs;Third,ethnic Chinese and non-ethnic Chinese,male and female students,undergraduates and graduate students,their academic Chinese curriculum needs are somewhat different.In response,the author tried to make the following suggestions based on the investigation:First,according to the specific needs of international students,the corresponding academic Chinese courses are offered.Second,do a goodjob in the research and development of academic Chinese textbooks.Finally,the academic Chinese curriculum should take into account individual differences of students.
