This is an English-Chinese translation report on A History of Art History(Excerpts). The author of the book is Christopher S.Wood, who is a professor at New York University. This book was published in 2019,and there is no Chinese translation version up to now.In the book, the author tracks the evolution of the historical study of art from the late Middle Ages through the rise of the modern scholarly discipline of art history. The parts, the art history of the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance are selected by the translator. The author finishes the book after synthesizing and evaluating a large number of works,so it has a certain reference value for future research on art history. In the process of translation, the translator has encountered two major kinds of translation difficulties: at lexical level and syntactical level. At the lexical level, there are many proper nouns, such as people's names, works' titles, art related words, and polysemous words. In order to translate these words accurately, the translator mainly applies the translation methods of adding footnotes,cut-in notes, and choice of word meanings. At the syntactical level, the translation of passive sentences and long sentences increase the difficulties of translation. For the passive sentences, the translator mainly uses the methods of translating passive sentences into Chinese active sentences and translating passive sentences into Chinese passive sentences. For the long sentences, the translator uses the methods of amplification, linear translation, embedding and split. Finally, the translator sums up the experience and limitations of translation. In the process of translation, the translator knows that it is a necessary thing to learn relevant knowledge and accumulate some knowledge in daily life and the translator should master both English and Chinese skillfully. What's more, the translator should seek help from different channels in meeting difficult problems. The translator learns a lot through this translation report.Only by continuous learning can the translation be done well.Art comes from life and art is closely connected with people's lives. From art, people can have a deep insight into culture, history, aesthetics and other information in different periods. Therefore, the study of art history is not only a process of understanding the development and change of art,but also an exploration of the spiritual track of human civilization. At last, the translator hopes that the translation of A History of Art History(Excerpts)can provide some references for the future translation practice and relevant research on art history.
