As a type of important political documents,report on the work of the Central Government and those on the work of local governments contain information on China's latest developments in politics,economy,society,culture,etc.Their English versions are an important medium for the international community to know more about China at present.Therefore,it is of great significance to study the linguistic features of the report of a municipal government and to prove the practical methods and techniques for translation of such a text.Firstly,this report introduces the background of the project,overviews current studies on the translation of political texts,especially government work reports,proposes proper translation principles,i.e.faithfulness,smoothness and comprehensibility,and points out the purpose and significance of the research.Secondly,it analyzes lexical,syntactic and textual features of Report on the Work of Shangqiu Municipal Government in 2019,such as the use of numeral compact expressions,Chinese-featured words,highly frequently used verbs,sentences without subjects and involved sentences.Then,it describes the translation process,including pre-translation preparations,comprehension and reproduction,and post-translation proofreading.Thirdly,the thesis demonstrates the feasibility of the three translation principles and conducts a case study with typical examples analyzed.Necessary methods and techniques for translation of words and sentences in the report are proved to be very practical,such as literal translation,literal translation with annotations,free translation,conversion of word classes,conversion of the voice,retainment or adjustment of the original order,division,etc.At the same time,the translated text is analyzed from the perspective of cohesion and coherence,and various factors that lead to smoothness of the version are investigated.Finally,the author summarizes his main findings and points out some aspects to be improved.This report is intended to provide inexperienced translators with some enlightenment and to enable them to be acquainted with practical strategies and techniques for translating government work reports and similar political texts so that the image of China may be further improved.
