With the rapid development of today’s economic globalization, countries around the worldcommunicate more and more in-depth. Since the reform and opening-up, China’s comprehensivenational strength has improved significantly on the world stage. Therefore, translating theChinese political documents is conducive to helping the peoples of the world to understandChina’s political system, principles and policies, as well as political stand. Based on previousstudies, and combining with translation examples in the Report on the Work of the ShandongProvincial Government (2013), the writer makes a detailed analysis of the Shandong governmentwork report from three dimensions: lexical, syntactic, and discourse translation.In this thesis, examples are offered to demonstrate the translation principles and strategies.Through the three-dimensioned analysis, it is concluded that the underlying translation principlesfor government work report include accuracy, integrity of information, continuity and adaptation,intelligibility and naturalness. In order to improve the quality of Chinese government workreport and better serve international communication, this report provides a background of thetask, its process and case analysis. It attempts to study the English translation of Chinesegovernment work report from the aspects of lexical level, syntactic level and textual level. Thisreport has done research on the source text and summarized its features firstly. Then the writergives a case analysis on translation of the source text.Effective translation strategies are needed to ensure the quality of political documentstranslation, which help set up good image for China. The report probes into the translation fromthe perspective of equivalence theory. Based on it, the translator must adjust the source textaccording to translation purpose and function of the target text. In addition, to ensure asuccessful translation, the suitable translation strategies are advocated. In the process oftranslation, a translator also needs to consider the source language culture, of which some factorsneed to be kept, deleted or adjusted.This paper discusses the English translation of phrases and sentences in political documents,which aims at improving the quality of the English translation of political documents, and hopesto help inspire other MTI students to improve their translating skills in this field. |
