The strategies of learning Chinese character,which are essential in the primary stage of Chinese study,is a specific measure and method to enhance students' writing and reading ability while learning Chinese characters.Both Japan and South Korea belong to the Chinese-character cultural circle,they have Chinese characters used in common.Students from Japan and South Korea in the elementary level have inherent advantage to remember similar Chinese characters.A deep understanding of the strategies of learning Chinese characters can assist Chinese character teaching better and help students learn them.Being influenced by their mother tongue and the background of Chinese learning,their choice of strategies of learning Chinese character also exist difference inevitably.Therefore,we need to make the differences between them clearly and then teach purposely.From the perspective of strategies of learning Chinese character,this paper investigates the use of strategies of learning Chinese character and the basic situation of Chinese character study of 95 Japanese and Korean elementary learners who have acquired HSK III but haven't obtained HSK II certificate at home and abroad by means of a questionnaire.Meanwhile,it compares the differences in their choice of strategies of learning Chinese character between the two countries as well as come up with relevant teaching suggestions.To begin with,the paper states the origin of the opted topic,the theoretical of the study and the present situation of study at home and abroad,including three aspects,which are the study of second language learning strategies at home and abroad,the study of strategies of learning Chinese as well as the study of strategies of learning Chinese character.Then,it elaborates the investigation and analysis of strategies of learning Chinese character of Japanese and Korean students in the elementary level and draws following conclusions by analyzing the investigated data: 1.It shows a positive trend in the utilization of the strategies of learning Chinese characters between Japanese and Korean students.2.Students from Japan and South Korea in the elementary level use the strategy of font frequently.3.Japanese and Korean students are used to practicing and memorizing Chinese characters in a way of mechanically copying.4.Japanese learners generally harbor that the difficulty of Chinese characters is moderate,but the pronunciation is difficult while Korean students generally hold such a view that the learning of Chinese characters is difficult,especially the shape of characters,which is the most hard part,putting forward suggestions that for Japanese students we should strengthen their stroke training,boost the practice of pronunciation,form and meaning.What's more,to focus on near-character characters.And for Korean students,emphasizing the teaching of parts and attaching attention to the teaching of the pronunciation are necessary.
