The funeral activities of Buddhist Monks and Nuns in dunhuang were rich in content and varied in forms during Tang Dynasty,Five Dynasties,and early Song Dynasty.The funeral is its core link,including two stages which are the ritual at the end of the Buddhist and the funeral after the transition.And the initial final shrines,mourners and mourning,big night memorial,funeral,the tower one after the other,the ceremony festival is complicated,but it conveys the common theme is hoping for the deceased to enter the pure land as soon as possible,to witness the Buddha fruit.In addition to cremation and pylons,earth burial,grottoes burying are also the burial system they often use,Besides,Buddhist Monks and Nuns of Dunhuang will also use shadow caves to place the remains of eminent monks to show their reverence.After the burial,Buddhists also commemorate the dead with a ceremony.The seven-days funeral rites,the hundred-day funeral rites,the death-day funeral rites,the cold food and the tomb-sweeping Festival are all the days when Buddhists set up their rites and make sacrifices.From this,it can be seen that the practice of rites of Buddhist Monks and Nuns in Dunhuang has deep roots with the traditional funeral culture in China.The funeral activities,which are composed of burial ceremony,burial system and fasting ceremony,are not only the reflection of the development of Buddhism in Dunhuang,but also the epitome of the whole Buddhist funeral culture During Tang Dynasty,Five Dynasties and,and Early Song Dynasty.
