News is an indispensable way for people to obtain information in their lives.People can know what is happening in the world today by reading news.In various news genres, news commentary is playing a major role in the news dissemination, and it is a kind of text which is characterized of both news features and commentary features.News commentary not only provides real-time news and information, but also expresses the author's position and viewpoints. It enables readers to further understand the nature and significance behind news events. So the translation of news commentary text is essential. This report is based on the translation of two articles in The Atlantic. The first one is a series of press reviews of Democrats and Republicans triggered by the defeat of Hillary Clinton in the wake of the 2016 American presidential election. The second one tells how the author speculates about this era after Donald Trump took office.Since much information is delivered in limited sections,a large number of long sentences appears in these two articles.According to the characteristics of the news commentary text, the author uses the functional equivalence theory which was raised by Eugene Nida as the theoretical guideline and has case study analyzing the English long sentences that appear in the article. The author attempts to summarize the reasonable translation methods, such as the reconstruction method, the division method, the embedding method and the inversion method and other translation methods. It is hoped that this report may enrich the research of long English sentence translation and the summary of translation experience can be of some value to other news commentary text translations.
