This practical report is based on the translation of chapters eleven to fifteen of The Crest of the Continent by Ernest Ingersoll,a famous American author, naturalist and explorer. The selected chapters are the real exploration and investigation records of the author in the Rocky Mountains and its surrounding areas of the United States, including local mountains and rivers, geology and mineral resources, ancient ruins, historical background, human life and many other aspects. The author's language is objective and rigorous on the whole, but it is also humorous and vivid,so that readers can have a comprehensive and objective understanding of the Rocky Mountains and its surrounding areas in a relaxed reading experience. There are a large number of long sentences in the original work, most of which are complex in structure and contain rich information, causing many difficulties during the process of translation. The translation concept embodied in Nida's functional equivalence theory is very applicable to the Chinese translation of English long sentences, which can guide the translator to strive for a high-quality translation that meets the needs of the readers. Therefore, under the guidance of Nida's functional equivalence theory, this report relies on common translation skills, combines with the long sentences encountered in this translation practice, analyzes specific problems in detail, takescomprehensive consideration, and handles them flexibly,in order to achieve a better translation. This report includes five chapters: the first chapter is a brief introduction to the translation practice, including the background and significance of the translation task and the nature and characteristics of the content of the translation task. The second chapter is the description of translation process, including the preparation before translation, translation process and post translation matters these three parts. The third chapter is the overview of functional equivalence theory and the analysis of English long sentences, including there parts: the overview of functional equivalence theory, the comparison of English and Chinese syntactic structures, and the definition and characteristics of English long sentences.Chapter four is about long sentence translation techniques in The Crest of the Continent, this is the main part of this report. It is guided by the theory of functional equivalence, makes a case study of the long sentences encountered in this translation practice by using sequential translation, reverse translation, division and synthesis translation these four translation techniques. The fifth chapter is the summary, which describes the experience during the process of completing translation practice and writing this report.
