Based on the seventh to eleventh chapters of The Second Mountain:The Questf or a Moral Life as the source text, this report aims at discussing the translation of abstract nouns from English to Chinese. The text mainly demonstrates the author's interpretation of life on the second mountain-a mountain of promise making and tells enticing and philosophical stories of second mountain's people in humorous and plain languageAbstract nouns,as a category of nouns often used to present complex ideas and concepts in English, display the characteristics of thinking in English and have great significance of enriching the language and the diversity of it.Not only are they abundantly adopted in the English-speaking world, but they are widely applied to the ST.By detailed analysis of three types of abstract nouns, namely inherent abstract nouns, nouns derived and transformed from verbs and abstract nouns derived and transformed from adjectives, the translator summarizes the characteristics and functions and tries to figure out proper translation methods of each category to make effective delivery of abstract nouns'semantic meaning and therefore guide translator's future practiceAt the end of this report, the translator comes up with three major findings of noun translation:1)the existing classification of abstract nouns can be improved by sorting them according to the parts of speech;2)as for translation methods, given the goal to convey accurate and complete information during translating and concerning the distinct characteristics between Chinese and English, every type of nouns has its own distinguishing features;3)however,concretization is one of the most adopted strategies since abstract nouns usually show concrete meanings in the source context.
