Interpreting plays a significant role in international communication and has been studied by many scholars. In the interpreting process, the application of anticipation can save limited time and play key role in simultaneous interpreting. The thesis focuses on the effectiveness of the use of anticipation in English-Chinese SI.The thesis begins with the brief introduction of the importance of anticipation in SI and summarizes the previous study on anticipation. Then Gile’s Effort Model is drawn on to analyze one simulated SI of the writer. The simulation task is the interpreting of a speech delivered by President Obama in Shanghai Fudan University during his state visit in China. The thesis first analyzes the features of his speech, which is followed by the description of the corresponding preliminary preparations and the process of task completion. Afterwards the interpreter’s simulated interpreting is analyzed with Gile’s Effort Model in great detail to examine the effectiveness of anticipation. The analysis indicates that the first priority should be given to comprehension. Although anticipation is most frequently applied in SI and the interpreting task can not be completed without resorting to it, chances that it does not fit remain. The prejudgement of anticipation and the conflicts between anticipation and other strategies are unavoidable. For the prejudgement of anticipation, here is the solution:the interpreter shall work in context. When it comes to complicated postpositional modifiers, time consuming of anticipation puts the interpreter in a dilemma. There always are clashes and competitions between anticipation and other strategies. The interpreter needs to choose proper strategies and shift strategies quickly according to the context. On the basis of full comprehension in the context, the interpreter can resolve the conflicts between anticipation and other strategies. Thus the effective use of anticipation is realized.
