A Translation Report On Scientific Text Under The Guidance Of Skopos Theory

The source text of this translation practice is excerpted from the test report ElectroOsmotic Pulse(EOP)Technology for Control of Water Seepage in Concrete Structures published by U.S.Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory.The three chapters selected by the translator as the source text mainly introduce the test processes of applying EOP technology to concrete structures and test results and give conclusions and recommendations.As a scientific test report,the source text features a formal style and an objective stand.It aims at conveying specific test processes and results to intended readers.To reach the communicative purpose of the target text,the translator carried out the translation practice under the guidance of skopos theory.With the intended purpose of the target text serving as the starting point,the translator took the acceptability and cultural background of recipients into consideration,and chose suitable translation strategies and methods.In the whole translation process,the translator carried out translation from various perspectives such as lexical and syntactical perspectives.In addition,the translator also applied some translation methods into practice under guidance of skopos theory.The stylistic characteristics of scientific texts and the law of differences between English and Chinese are systematically summarized.Then,the translator made an in-depth study of English to Chinse Translation of scientific texts under the guidance of Skopos theory,and comprehensively explored the translation process and relevant skills of scientific texts.This report attempts to elaborate on how skopos theory guides the translation of EST texts by analyzing the communicative purpose-oriented translation process,hoping to provide theoretical support and reference for translation of texts about underground water intrusion prevention.
