The current translation project is on The Lieutenant, which is written by Kate Grenville,a renowned contemporary Australian writer. In The Lieutenant,Grenville re-examines the tangled history of Australia and Britain, focusing on the racial and cultural divide and writing about the nobility and inferiority of human nature in the toughest choices. The text for the translation project is the third chapter,“The Names of Things”,which belongs to literary translation. The language of this book is beautiful and philosophical, and the story is fascinating. Therefore, the translation has research value and aesthetic significance to some extent. This translation project report is guided by Skopos theory, with the communicative nature of the target text as the primary purpose and the coherence and fidelity of the target language as the focus, which is in line with the essence of literary translation. Therefore, this paper conducts case studies on literary translation guided by Skopos theory through the elaboration and case analysis. The biggest difficulty of this translation project is mainly reflected in the translation of vocabulary, sentence patterns and texts. This is reflected in the translation of nouns, verbs, prepositions and adjectives in special contexts at the lexical level, the translation of passive sentences, attributive sentences and long sentences in sentence structure, the coherence, cohesion and literary beauty at the textual level. To solve these difficulties, under the guidance of its " purpose rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule" of the Skopos theory, some translation skills are used to solve these difficulties.Through this translation practice, the author finds that in literary translation, the translator can adopt certain translation methods and strategies to solve the difficult problems in literary translation according to the expectation of the intended recipient and the translator's understanding of the intention of the original text,so as to restore the artistic conception and aesthetic feeling of the original text to the greatest extent.
