Problems And Strategies Of Deverbalization In Chinese To English Consecutive Interpreting

As the first systematic interpreting theory in the world,the interpretive theory of translation focuses on the dynamic process of conveying meaning instead of analyzing the static language structure.According to the interpretive theory,interpreting includes three steps: understanding the source language,de-verbalization,and conveying the meaning and emotions in the target language.In the interpretive theory,the object of interpretation is meaning rather than language.The interpreter,with his language and non-language knowledge,understands the meaning of the source language and conveys the meaning in the target language.This process is called de-verbalization.This paper takes the author's consecutive interpreting performance at the mock conference “2019 Sichuan Province 2nd Family Education Summit Forum” as a case study.Unsuccessful examples of de-verbalization are analyzed in detail and revised versions are provided respectively.This paper also discusses the potential strategies of improving deverbalization in interpreting based on existing research results and this specific case study,in hopes of providing some experience and guidance for future interpretation practice.
