Note-taking plays an important role in consecutive interpreting.First, notes assist interpreters' memory and help them recall content.Second, interpreters are essentially multitasking in consecutive;they take notes as they grasp the ideas before rendering the message into the target language.Note-taking is a vital tool to avoid cognitive overload.Effective consecutive notes give cues during interpreting and help present complete and logical message. It remains one of the must-have skills for every practicing interpreter. The thesis pinpoints note-taking problems and suggests coping strategies based on the author's performance during the mock conference,China IT Summit(Shenzhen). The thesis first sums up three criteria for effective note-taking.It then locates problems in the author's note-taking after a review of notes. It is found that the three major problems are incomplete or inaccurate message, loss of logical links, and poor readability. The causes also vary, including improper allocation of cognitive resources, ineffective use of symbols, too much unnecessary noting of secondary information, and unrecognizable characters. In the final chapter, the thesis proposes three solutions,i.e.,finding a balance between taking notes and capturing message, highlighting logical links in the notes, enhancing background knowledge and pre-interpreting preparation.
