In consecutive interpreting,given the stark contrast between Chinese and English and the fact that interpreters inevitably have some inadequacies in their language competence,background knowledge and interpreting skills,there must be,involuntarily or not,improper additions and omissions in their utterances,thus compromising messages and logic in the target language and hindering audiences from comprehending the original speech.This thesis takes the speech from the mock conference of the second Sichuan Family Education Summit to identify and categorize additions and omissions in the author's interpreting,for the purpose of looking for causes behind and relevant solutions.It classifies the improper additions in the case into four types: qualifier addition,elaboration addition,relationship addition and repetitive addition;the thesis also divides the improper omissions into two categories: skipping omission and comprehension omission.The author analyses the note,compares the original speech transcript with the interpreting script and determines six causes of improper additions and omissions from three aspects: listening,note-taking and delivering.With the causes pinpointed,the author formulates six solutions,namely,enhancing listening comprehension of Chinese speeches and optimizing message integration,simplifying note layout and upgrading note-taking symbols,and diversifying English expressions and adjusting delivering pattern.It is hoped that this case study can provide reference for other interpreters to solve similar problems and corpus for the academic society to research into similar subjects.
