The Causes And Strategies Of Redundancy In Spanish-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting

Redundancy is one of the important factors that may determine how well the audience could understand the speaker during an interpretation.In recent years,the interpretation academics of China has been putting more and more emphasis on the phenomenon of redundancy in target language.This thesis takes the Mock Conference of the COVID-19 Situation in Argentina as an example to discuss the phenomenon and causes of redundancy in target language in Spanish-Chinese consecutive interpretation.First of all,the author inquires into previous academic research and relevant theories,defines the redundancy in target language of Spanish-Chinese consecutive interpretation and classifies it into three categories(repetition,self-repair and meaningless fillers)based on their apparent forms.Secondly,the author transcribes the 45 minutes recording of the mock conference and counted the number of redundancy cases,in which there are 69 cases in the original speech and 127 in the interpretation.It's easy to notice the serious redundancy problem in the target language,especially the meaningless fillers.On the basis of previous researches and the case,the author explains the forming process of redundancy and analyzes the causes.For example,Spanish-Chinese interpreters tend to add unnecessary subjects for sentences,which can lead to repetitions;when the interpreter likes to start the sentence with cohesive markers,these markers can become meaningless fillers,etc.Finally,the thesis suggests several on-site strategies to cut redundancy(get familiar with the speaker's style in advance,comb the logic before starting to interpret,intensify self-monitoring on the use of indefinite quantifiers,etc.)and some practical methods of routine practices(practice more sight translation with verbs in same conjugation forms,store up prefabricated chunks to elevate the output rate,etc.).
