The paper tries to study redundancy in English-Chinese consecutive interpretation.Redundancy often occurs in task-intensive and time-critical interpreting activities.Invalid redundancy lowers interpretation's quality and fluency. It also impedes listeners' understanding and therefore contributes to the lack of confidence on interpreter. However, valid redundancy can help convey speaker's message in a better way.The paper is based on the English-Chinese interpretation case of the full address delivered by Joseph Nye in Oxford Union. Before looking into the case, the author first introduces the definition of redundancy in different fields and different classifications. One of the most common classifications is phonetic and linguistic redundancy.Pragmatically, the author chooses to divide the redundancy in interpretation into two types: valid redundancy and invalid redundancy.Due to a lot of invalid phonetic redundancy and linguistic redundancy in interpreting, the author failed to convey the speaker's message concisely and smoothly in the mock conference.By collecting and analyzing the redundancy cases in the interpretation, the author found the causes of invalid redundancy and the situations where valid redundancy was necessary. Then the author suggested corresponding coping strategies based on these factors. It is hoped that this study can help interpreters avoid invalid redundancy and make best use of valid redundancy to improve interpreting quality, fluency and efficiency.
