| Redundancy is a common problem for student interpreters in Chinese-Spanish consecutive interpreting.Redundancy will reduce the informativeness of the interpretation and the efficiency of communication;furthermore,it also affects the meaning transference, acceptability and speed of interpretation.Redundancy may be caused by multiple factors: the structural differences between Chinese and Spanish, interference of source language,disfluencies,stress-reducing strategies of interpreter in consecutive interpretation.Based on the consecutive interpreting for the opening speech of Vice Premier Wang Yang in a mock conference of 22 nd General Assembly of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, this thesis aims to analyze the causes and coping strategies of redundancy in ChineseSpanish interpreting. In this conference, the speaker spoke at a moderate rate with a draft;the speech is formal and information-intensive.The interpreter produced redundancy which can be categorized into five main forms: unmeaning fill-in,semantic repetition,self-correction,complexity of syntax and unnecessary additions.Based on a detailed analysis, the author found four leading causes to the redundancy: inappropriate notes-taking,incapability of Chinese-Spanish conversion, excessive pursuit of fluency, and bad language habits.Accordingly,to cope with the causes above, the author proposed four specific strategies: improving the efficiency of note-taking,optimizing the structure of notes, increasing the accumulation of lexical chunks and flexibility of reformulating sentence structures, maintaining stable output, reducing the unnecessary addition, strengthening monitoring during interpreting and subsequent selfevaluation in order to overcome bad language habits. |
