It has been tricky to translate irony.Employing irony relies on particular social and cultural space-time,specific context and is laden with the writer's individual style, the rich implication and the corresponding effect of a work of irony, therefore, are difficult to be represented in the translation.Wang Xiaobo's novella Men around Thirty is themed around ‘one's being' and the writer uses irony in various ways, thus making irony a significant while difficult part to translate.Stylistic analysis, however, could facilitate the translation of irony.Being ironic in the aspect of language means an outer form, not consistent with the real intention,is used to conceal the latter and therefore in irony the form and the meaning are contrarily-connected,and stylistics, emphasizing both the language form and the meaning, can provide a vintage point for translators to differentiate and analyze the linguistic devices and the effects of irony.Stylistic analysis helps with the English translation of Men around Thirty by enabling the translator, with prior understanding of the novel's theme,Wang Xiaobo's individual style and the context,to focus on ‘parody',‘understatement' and ‘antiphrasis',categorized according to the main techniques used to create irony in the original text, and helping reproduce the ironic effects in the TL text. The thesis argues, through the implementation and research of the Chinese-English translation project, that different ironic narrations are with different stylistic features, and in order to produce equivalent ironic effect, the translator could use different strategies and various skills—when there is no need to adjust the original stylistic devices to reach equivalent effect, the translator could use imitation, direct conversion, etc.,but not to use a new pattern;when the ironic effect is sabotaged if the stylistic devices stay the same, the translator must figure out new ones to build equivalent effect, and for this, translator could use repetition, coinage, changing the narrative perspective, amplification, omission, etc.
