Translation Strategies For Parenthesis In Scientific Texts

Nowadays,the shortage of energy is getting more and more serious and has attracted great attention.Scientists of energy technology have made every effort to make the best use of energy.Even so,to solve the energy problem still requires the joint efforts of all parties and the spread of the knowledge in this field.As an important book in the field of energy,the book Energy: Management,Supply and Conservation which is written by Clive Beggs has fifteen chapters.It focuses on the management,supply and protection of energy,and covers the utilization experience and development status of electricity,oil,natural gas and emerging renewable energy in many countries.In order to help people to know about the severe situation of the energy,the measures to cope with the shortage,as well as the experiences of various countries in dealing with energy problems,the translator sets out to translate part of this book.The translator chooses Chapter Three,Four and Five as the source text,due to the large number of parentheses.Parentheses are very commonly used in English.They can be words,phrases or clauses to make a supplement,explanation,or summary of the source text,etc.In the process of translating English into Chinese,literal translation of these parentheses may make the translated text unsatisfied and less readable.Therefore,it is very important for translators to study how to translate these parentheses.In this report,the translator compares the differences between Chinese and English parenthesis and English and Chinese two languages.In the end,the report summarizes some translation strategies that can be used in the translation of parenthesis,which are very practical.This report includes six chapters.Chapter One is an introduction,in which the general content of the source text and its language features are introduced.Chapter Two describes the process of the translation which is generally divided into three phases: pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Chapter Three aims to introduce the theoretical framework which guides the writing of this report and provide theoretical basis for the translation practice.Chapter Four mainly describes the functions and forms of parenthesis,and Chinese and English parenthesis are compared.And in this chapter,the translator divides parentheses into three categories: comma-separated parenthesis,parenthesis in brackets and dash-delimited parenthesis,according to punctuation marks which separates them.Chapter Five lists many typical parentheses and analyzes them semantically,and translation strategies like preposition,embedding,inversion,conversion and amplification are put forward on the basis of case study.Chapter Six summarizes findings and points out limitations of this report.
