With the rapid development of China's social economy, new things emerge in endlessly, and new words also emerge.Neologism is an important way for foreign students to understand Chinese society and culture,as well as an important vocabulary supplement for them to learn Chinese. In order to understand the current situation of the use of new words by middle and advanced level foreign students,we conducted a targeted questionnaire survey. The questionnaire survey is mainly used to find out the basic situation of foreign students' access to new words, their awareness of the meaning of new words, their classification and grasp of new words, ways of using new words and their attitude towards the use of new words. We analyze the survey data from four aspects: meaning errors, grammatical errors, context application problems and the influence of mother tongue culture on foreign students' understanding of Chinese neologisms. We find that there are many problems in the use of new words by foreign students. The main problems are that they can't understand the meaning of new words accurately, which leads to the misuse of new words and affects the accurate expression of context. The unclear understanding of the grammatical usage rules of new words leads to the inaccurate use of new words. There is no reference to the specificcontext, but the literal meaning of the new words to ponder over, resulting in the word does not express the meaning.Due to the interference of mother tongue culture, foreign students have difficulties in understanding new words.Based on the results of the questionnaire survey,we also put forward the corresponding teaching thinking and suggestions to promote foreign students to learn new words.
