Abstract/Summary:
International military training is an important part of military diplomacy,and the International College of Defense Studies(hereinafter referred to as ICDS),National Defense University,PLA is the highest level of international military training,the main mission of which is to train senior foreign military and civilian officers and to conduct international exchanges and academic discussions in the field of defense and security.From September 2018 to January 2019,the author served as an interpreting intern in ICDS,during which he undertook several liaison interpreting tasks.Guided by Ren Wen’s theory of liaison interpreter’s subjectivity consciousness,this report categorizes the author’s interpreting roles into gate-keeper of the speaker’s message,communication facilitator,power constructer,and special assistant,and selects typical cases to analyze how the interpreter’s visibility consciousness,empowerment consciousness,and concept of non-neutral stance are manifested through various roles and interpersonal functions,thus positively influencing the process and outcome of cross-linguistic and cross-cultural communicative activities.This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter one provides an overview of the author ’s internship in ICDS,introduces characteristics of interpreting tasks,and client’s requirements.Chapter two describes the performance of the interpreting tasks,including pre-task preparation,interpreting process,and self-assessment and analysis after interpreting.Chapter three is a clarification of theoretical concepts,including liaison interpreting,roles of interpreter,and the theory of liaison interpreter’s subjectivity consciousness.Chapter four analyzes,through specific cases,how the liaison interpreter’s subjectivity consciousness is manifested in different roles and its impact on communicative activities,and also,attempts to put forward improvement measures.Chapter five concludes the report with recommendations on how to improve liaison interpreter ’s work in international military training.
