A Project Report On Traditional Chinese Medicine Gynecology Clinical Interpretation At Nanjing University Of Chinese Medicine

With the spread of health preserving culture and the changes of people's health concept,traditional Chinese medicine(TCM)has been gradually recognized and accepted by the international community.Every year,many foreign students come to China to study TCM while interpreting is an essential tool in teaching.The reporter participated in the TCM Gynecology Clinical Interpretation Project held at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine,which provided TCM gynecological courses for medical students from Australia.The reporter worked as a liaison interpreting in it from June to August in 2019.The major barriers the reporter encountered in the project came from the following three aspects: lack of professional knowledge mainly included lack of gynecological knowledge and difficulties with gynecological terminologies;insufficiency of cross-cultural awareness came from misunderstanding of TCM culture-loaded words and insensitivity to euphemism;and poor psychological qualities in on-site interpretation involved pressure from bilingual over-hearer and lack of flexibility in linguistic emergencies.Through analysis of interpreting examples,the reporter illustrates how to cope with these problems and improve her interpretation ability.First,make full preparation before interpretation especially accumulating gynecological knowledge and building a bilingual corpus.Second,accumulate knowledge about TCM culture and break the mind-set.Third,deal with stress positively and use emergency strategies.
