The source texts of this translation practice are taken from Wei Weineng's book Selects of Guilin Steles,a collection of a hundred and five representative works of steles in Guilin.Based on first-hand materials and related research findings for years, the book was compiled by the Museum of Guihai Steles' Forest,a national second-level museum. As an informative text,it employs accurate and objective expressions and contains a vast amount of technical terms. The author of the report translated the first thirty five passages from the book to provide English readers with a deep perception of the Guilin steles, the knowledge about the culture background and the ancient Chinese language concerning the source texts,as well as to provide scholars of the Guilin steles with relative references. The thirty five passages selected for translation contain rich information about ancient politic, economy and culture as well as the knowledge about steles. In addition, the texts are formal in wording, accurate in expressions, and truthful in information.During the translation practice, the author of the report encountered various challenges and summarized them into three types, namely, rhetorical devices, lexicon and grammatical structures. With that in mind, the author of the report selected and analyzed typical cases by expounding on the application of the functional equivalence theory from three perspectives: rhetorical meanings, lexical meanings and grammatical meanings. The report consists of five parts.Part one introduces the source of the translation materials, the objectives and significance of this translation practice, and the layout of the report.Part two describes the translation process, including the phases of pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.Part three scrutinizes the theory of functional equivalence by discussing its evolution and the specific notion.Part four focuses on the case study, analyzing the translation of the typical cases in terms of rhetoric meanings, lexical meanings and grammatical meanings, with the consideration of the features in the first thirty five passages and the guidance of functional equivalence theory.Part five is the conclusion of the translation experience that includes the gains and limitation.
