The Party and state leaders of China pay high attention to voluntary service and have made constant instructions on typical voluntary stories at various fields. In General Secretary Xi Jinping's reply to Benyu Volunteers Group's letter from HuaZhong Agricultural University in 2013,he expressed his expectations that they should carry out the volunteer spirit of "Dedication,Friendship,Mutual-help,Progress",stay with motherland, dedicate to the people, and make more contributions to the realization of China Dream as well.University student volunteers, featuring great compassion and active participation, are the leading and main force of the voluntary service. However, there are problems such as serious volunteer loss, high participation rate with low frequency and short period, etc. Therefore,it is an urgent problem to optimize the administration of voluntary organizations, stimulate volunteers' motivation and promote the voluntary service of China, which needs to be dealt with. After referring to a large amount of literature and borrowing the research and definitions about the motivation of voluntary service, the author has designed a semi-structured in-depth interview and questionnaires to investigate students from 7 universities in Hubei. The researcher has collected 350 questionnaires, among which 340 are valid. The data was analyzed by SPSS22.0,and through descriptive and correlation analysis, the author aims to draw the general situation of university students'participation of voluntary service, and make an analysis of the relationships between university student volunteers of different characters and voluntary motivating factors, and also the relationship between voluntary motivating factors and enthusiasm of university student volunteers, management of voluntary organizations and voluntary service level.Based on Potter-Lawler's Comprehensive Motivation Theory and empirical research,it is found that motivating factors of university students' volunteering are of various kinds, which can be classified into at least 6 categories, namely individual quality and capacity, satisfaction, role perception, effort, policy direction and social support. The author divided these 6 factors into internal motivating factors(the first 4 factors)and external ones(the last 2).Through correlation analysis within internal and external dimensions, together with in-depth interviews with university student volunteers and ideas and suggestions of experts and scholars as well, the author has reached following conclusions:1.Voluntary motivating factors influence university student voluntary service.2.Voluntary motivating factors influence volunteers' enthusiasm and the management of volunteer organizations, but are not evidently correlated with the service level of university student volunteers.Based on a large number of literature, the author has found that current theoretical and practical research on motivators of university students' volunteer service do not keep up with the growth of university student volunteers and diversified development of voluntary activities, among which most of them are qualitative research. However in this paper, the author makes use of Potter and Lawler's Comprehensive Motivation Theory to study the intrinsic and extrinsic motivators of university students' volunteer service.Through empirical analysis, the author aims to explore the defects and deficiencies of the incentive mechanism of university student volunteer service in China and put forward constructive suggestions, aiming to improve its management, optimize the motivation mechanism, stimulate more students to participate in voluntary activities, promote their all-round development, and promote vigorous development of university student volunteer service.
