Research On The Survival Strategies Of Young Female Migrant Workers In Catering Industry Under Identity Prejudice

Due to the inherent differences between urban and rural areas,gender discrimination-class stratification and other factors,young female migrant workers in catering industry often suffer from exclusion and discrimination from customers,bosses,colleagues and other parties due to group identity prejudice.Identity prejudice brings not only the difficult plight of urban life to the young female migrant workers,but also the "relative deprivation" to their psychology,which makes them constantly marginalized by the society,resulting in their identity cognition blurred,and the "second-class citizen" mentality internalized in their ideology,greatly increasing.It also increases the possibility of their disruption of citizenization,which makes them encounter many difficulties in seeking rational survival strategies.Taking the catering industry in Xuhui District of Shanghai as an example,this paper uses interview method,literature method and observation method as research methods to observe,describe and summarize the various forms of identity prejudice they encounter in their daily life,and to study how they seek rational survival strategies under identity prejudice.This paper argues that women migrant workers,as rural people,women,waiters of different identities,encounter a variety of forms of identity prejudice from urban customers,restaurant bosses and colleagues;the causes of prejudice are urban-rural differences,gender discrimination and class stratification.In order to seek a rational survival strategy in the environment of identity prejudice,female migrant workers generally adopt two choices of action:tolerance and identity breakthrough and daily struggle.Adaptation and obedience include self-discipline,superficial obedience,individual self-help and subjectivity expression,identity breakthrough through physical consumption,etc.Daily struggle is a desperate action in survival strategy.They are eager to fight for the unjust treatment which they suffer from,but they do not have the social capital needed for collective public struggle.They had to internalize the consciousness and behavior of resistance in their daily life,thus forming a kind of private daily struggle.This kind of daily struggle is characterized by living,individualized,fragmented,concealed and unstructured.Its concrete manifestations are laziness and idleness,deception and adventure,voting with feet,and the formation of subculture.The goal of young female migrant workers seeking survival strategies is to avoid risk,stabilize income and survive.The criterion of action is "safety first" and "avoiding the worst".Only by maintaining the dynamic balance between resistance action and adaptive behavior can they achieve the optimization of survival strategy.
