A Research On Identity Of Abe's Value-oriented Diplomacy

The purpose of this dissertation is to conduct a research on Japan's identity and Shinzo Abe's value-oriented diplomacy.This research will analyze how Abe's value-oriented diplomacy is linked to the national identities.The main structure of this dissertation will be arranged as follows:firstly,introducing relevant concepts on identity and diplomacy,and the connections between identity and diplomacy;secondly,reviewing the identities formed in the history of Japan;thirdly,introducing the characteristics of Abe's value-oriented diplomacy;lastly,analyzing the relationship between Abe's value-oriented diplomacy and Japan's identities.This research concludes that identity determines national interest and national interest guides foreign policy.Japan has formed the Western identity,Asian Imperialist identity and Open Regionalist identity in the history of Japan.Abe's value-oriented diplomacy advertises freedom,democracy,human rights and the rule of law,and focuses on strengthening cooperation with countries that share universal values.Western identity is the decisive factor affecting value-oriented diplomacy.However,Asian Imperialist identity that has not been effectively eliminated also affects the Abe's value-oriented diplomacy with Open Regionalist identity.Different identities determine different national interests and different national interests guide different national behaviors.Therefore,Abe's value-oriented diplomacy influenced by multiple identities presents different forms and characteristics.All in all,Western identity is the first,not the only.Abe's value-oriented diplomacy is also deeply influenced by the Asian Imperialist identity and Open Regionalist identity.Because of the influence of multiple identities,value-oriented diplomacy is mixed with contradictory features.
