The ability of map is a basic skill to get the effective geographic information from the map,master reading maps and use maps.Geography practice ability become an important part with the development of the core quality of geography.Paying attention to the students' ability of map,especially the map ability of Tibetan high school students is extremely important.The purpose of this paper is to improve the map education in Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Gannan,by investigating the current situation of the map ability of three high school students in Gannan Tibetan area.This paper summarized and hackled the relevant research in domestic and foreign countries of map ability through reading a large number of literature.According to the purpose of the research,the anthor compiled the interview outline and questionnaire of present situation of the map ability in high school in Tibetan area.Among 300 students of three schools in Gannan Tibetan area was conducted in this questionnaire,and 8 teachers and 10 students were interviewed,too.There are five research findings.Firstly,cognizing map ability of the high school students in Tibetan area is in the middle level and they have strong emotions towards maps in the whole,but there is a difference between the different schools.Most of the students can realize the importance of the map,but the students seldom read the map in their daily life.Secondly,students have weak map reading abilities but they have better knowledge of map elements.Most of the students understand the steps to read the map.However,they do not know how to start reading when they encounter a specific map.Thirdly,although they have little problem of the daily use of the map and the choice of the map,the ability of use map is weak and the use of the map is less in the daily life.Then,ability to analyze and make map is not good.Lastly,there are differences in the ability of students to analyze mapbetween different regions and different schools.However,the difference in the ability of students to analyze the map between grade,gender and household registration is notsignificant.There are difference in the ability of the students to make map between different schools,but the ability of students in different gender,regionsand the household registration is not significant.There is no correlation between the ability ofanalyzing map and making map.Based on the above analysis,the author thinks that improving the map ability of Tibetan high school students need three aspects to make effort from school,teachers and students themselves.At the same time,the author puts forward some specific suggestions to improve the map ability for the students.
