Parent education is an indispensable constitution of the education system,as well as a vital part of fundamental education,which plays an important role in the education process throughout a person's lifetime.Unfortunately,not all parents are equipped with the natural knowledge and skills to 'educate' their own children.With the development of our society,parent education has attracted more attention from the parents.Among all types of parent education,the one for children has its unique significance.The demands and motive for such parent education derived from a sense of skill deficiency combined with the understanding of the importance of the defective skill(s).Carrying out a study on the demands for parent education will certainly benefit the formulation of the contents,goals,and strategies of parent education that meets the parents' demands better.This present study analyzes the situation of parents' participation in parent education in Kunming,to understand parents' demand for it.The study collects data by literature referring,questionnaire survey,and individual interview.It also studies the development history of parent education in American and European countries by literature analysis as well as studies its development course in Hong Kong and Macau by literature analysis.It finally performs a comparative analysis of the current status of parent education in mainland China.The findings of this study are:1)Parents' demands varied with different education contents.The overall demands for parent education is optimal,but those for 'child-rearing knowledge cognition and skills' is the greatest while those for 'stress adjustment cognition and skills' is the lowest.2)The demands for parent education varies significantly with background variables like 'occupations of parents','family income',and 'level of education'.Housewives are more interested in 'child-raring knowledge and skills',while civil service staffs,teachers,staffs of institutions and enterprises are more interested in'stress adjustment cognition and skills'.The demands for parent education is positively correlated with family income.the median-level educated parents shows more demands for parent education than lower-or higher-level educated parents.3)The preferred form of parent education should be diversified,and conventional forms like lectures and training courses must be arranged properly with regard to parents' schedule and location accessibility.Each parent education course should be limited within 2 hours.The present study proposes that an innovated service system for children's parent education should be built with favourate policies supporting relevant parent education groups to elevate the recognition of the concept of parent education.The present study also advocates to establish parents' schools to offer parent education knowledge and skills.
