The method of teaching Chinese characters through its formation rules was created in 1991 by Jia Guojun of Education Scientific Research Institution of Hunan Province.It was created to help Chinese students in primary schools to learn more characters.But we think this method also fit the need of Chinese language and culture education in primary schools based on the advantage of it and the survey about it we made.Teaching Chinese characters has always been a big problem in primary Chinese language and culture education.Furthermore,more and more ethic Chinese abroad do not think they are Chinese and culture teaching has been cut down in recent years.The method of teaching Chinese characters through its formation rules not only can help students remember Chinese characters scientifically,but also can help them learn more Chinese culture.We concluded three different formation rules based on many predecessors' research:the formation rule by tracing to characters' source,the formation rule by analyzing characters at present,the formation rule by analyzing characters unscientifically.We also proposed three principles when analyzing characters:accuracy principle,succession principle and moderation principle.We used them to analyze the characters in Hanyu,and concluded five different types of Chinese characters when we teach them:characters that can be analyzed through pictophonetic components or meaning components,characters that can be analyzed through compnents together,characters that can be analyzed by dating from their origins,characters that can be analyzed but not scientifically and characters that cannot be analyzed.As for teaching design,we first concluded two teaching principles,which are reading before writing principle and characters linking to words principle,and five teaching methods,which are graphic and comparison method,components explaining method,comparing similar characters method,imagining method and classifying based on culture method.Then,we described the general teaching mode of the method of teaching Chinese characters through its formation rules.Finally,we designed two teaching plans,one for junior grade and another for senior grade.We hope this work can help Chinese teachers abroad teach Chinese in a better way.
