Factors Influencing Study Abroad From Young Universities In China

Number of student exchange programs is increasing and more and more students are going abroad,and more frequently among the rapid growth of cooperation between universities with rise of economic globalization and information networking.Students hope to enhance their value by going abroad so as to satisfy the increasingly diversified requirements for talents in today's world.In this context,young universities taking nearly 55.6%seats in China's circle of higher education have a significant research value as the new force for the internationalization of China's higher education.Xiamen University of Technology,a young university of technology,was selected to conduct a research survey for study abroad owing to its remarkable achievements in offering education with Chinese features in line with international practice,student exchange program included.In this paper,we studied Chinese and international literature combined with the situation of exchange students overseas from Xiamen University of Technology,and conducted a questionnaire survey targeted at the students of the "12th Five-Year Plan"2011-2017,for short-term exchange abroad.Data of review and questionnaire survey were used for statistical analysis.The paper begins with an introduction of the general situation of students going abroad from young universities in China.Four-dimensional factors are then analyzed in detail to determine their influence on students going abroad:students and their families,academics,home university,and national&international policies.Results from the survey and analysis has enabled the author to conclude that for study abroad,students themselves&their families play a significant role,and percentage of incoming international teachers and students to and outgoing scholars from the home university has a positive effect.Cooperation with host universities with substantial projects plays a leading role in student going overseas.Based on it,cooperative researches,scholarships and other promotions have actively facilitating effects with student exchange.There is also a positive correlation between size of student abroad with our national strength and international relations,and provincial and municipal supportive policies.Finally,the author puts forward some suggestions on promoting students of young universities of applied sciences and technology to go abroad.First,develop students' academic and communicative skills and their awareness of the need from globalization today.Secondly,establish a multi-department linkage mechanism in universities to enhance the overall awareness of globalization.Thirdly,use the favorable governmental policies,national,provincial and municipal,and raise the level of cooperation with stronger universities overseas.
