Research On The Governance Of World Sailing

Governance issues in International Non-Governmental Sports Organizations have remained in the public spotlight over recent years.In the past decades,the corruption scandal of FIFA and IOC has led to the increasing perception that International Sports Organizations are insufficiently democratic and lack of adequate transparency.As a consequence,the need for effective and good governance of all sport has become of critical importance.With IOC approving Agenda 2020,the movement of World Sailing has an increasing interest in governance.The research attempts to analyze the reason,plan and proceedings of Governance Modernization at World Sailing through reviewing the history and policy shifts of World Sailing and interviewing stakeholders including board members,committee members,athletes,ship owners,managers of sailing clubs and journalists.The findings indicate that world sailing is at a crossroads and facing three challenges.The position of sailing as an Olympic sport is not guaranteed indefinitely.Sailing is seeing a decline in participation figures in key traditional markets despite a growth in the number of member countries.The ineffective governance structure has led to a slow adaptation to changes in the surroundings of World Sailing.World Sailing have acknowledged all of those problems and started to launch the project of governance modernization.Not only the governance modernization of World Sailing is relatively autonomous,but also World sailing actively engage with all major stakeholders to address its good governance.As an executive team,The Board provides World Sailing with a clear strategic direction which is creating a world in which millions more people fall in love with sailing;achieving sport,technology and nature in perfect harmony;World Sailing make all work to protect the waters of the world.With the support of stakeholders,World Sailing is delivering the vision by keeping sailing in the Olympics by increasing participation and growing the global audience,launching and implementing a Sustainability Strategy 2030 and growing the sport geographically,increasing the levels of transparency and accountability in the governance structure.The attempts to make World Sailing more effective,efficient and independent have a significant role in achieving good governance of World Sailing.As a member of World Sailing,Chinese Yatching Associationg can take active part in the governance of World Sailing and make much more contributions to it,and then seize the opportunity to help China to win her international discourse power.The research has certain reference to the governance of Chinese Yachting Association and suggests Chinese Yachting Association involving different stakeholders into Board to participate in decision making and developing a sustainability strategy through sailing to protect marine environment.
