The urban system is the organic whole of the distribution structure of various scales and types of cities in a country or an area. The acceleration of the urbanization process in the world has promoted the flow of urban population, leading to the constant changes in the distribution of urban population size. The report of the Nineteenth Congress proposed that the implementation of a coordinated development strategy for the region should rely on urban agglomerations to promote the coordinated development of large, medium and small cities. With the accelerating development of urbanization, while the urban population is expanding and the agglomeration benefits are gradually increasing, external costs such as “urban diseases” have become increasingly prominent. It is particularly important to coordinate the development of large cities and small and medium-sized cities. In the urban system, large, medium and small cities complement each other and are indispensable. Therefore, the distribution of population size in different cities has a difference in resource allocation, which in turn affects the efficiency of economic growth. This paper takes the distribution of the population size of each provincial city as the research object, and analyzes the economic growth effect of China's urban population size distribution. This paper first analyzes the distribution characteristics of urban population size, and concludes that the population at the national level is mainly clustered with cities, mainly urban clusters in the Yangtze River Delta;the inter-provincial medium-sized cities in the eastern province have high levels of development, and the development of large cities is relatively inadequate; The scale of large cities in the middle and western provinces is well developed, and the development of small and medium-sized cities is relatively backward.Second, through the panel pulse model test of the q value and HHI of urban population distribution and economic growth respectively,we can see that the q value and the HHI of the inter-provincial urban population distribution are not conducive to promoting economic growth. The urban population size distribution HHI has the effect on economic growth Regional differences: the central and western provinces are not conducive to promoting economic growth, the eastern provinces are conducive to economic growth, which is incompatible with the insufficient development of population in the eastern major cities.Last, using the dynamic panel model to test the economic effect of urban population size distribution, the larger theHHI of urban population, the larger the urban population size is,which is not conducive to economic development;the urban population size distribution and economic growth exist "U"-type relations,at present, most of the inter-provincial provinces have exceeded the inflection point of the ideal grade distribution of urban population; The robustness test uses a spatial econometric model and empirically concludes that the HHI and q values of the urban population size distribution are not conducive to economic development, and are consistent with the empirical findings of the dynamic panel model.Based on the above research conclusions, according to the large regional disparity of urban population distribution in China, the distribution of urban population size in most provinces is irrational. We should start with the following three points to optimize the distribution of urban population size in China: First, the eastern provinces should increase the cohesiveness of big cities and give play to leading roles in big cities.Second, the central and western provinces should consolidate the carrying capacity of small and medium-sized cities and realize the coordinated development of large, medium and small cities. The third, according to local conditions,co-ordination,development of urban development policies suitable for the region.
