Over the past 40 years of reform and opening up,China's economic development has achieved unprecedented great achievements. In this process,China's population movement restrictions have been losened, population migration has become smoother, and the trend of population agglomeration in specific cities has become more and more obvious.Population agglomeration can directly reflect the attraction and competitiveness of a city.Whether it is the cohesion of resources or the development of industry,it will eventually manifest itself as agglomeration of population. Therefore, population agglomeration has become the core issues of concern in the field of demography, geography and economics. With the agglomeration of population, many cities have experienced different degrees of “urban diseases” in the process of urbanization. However, there are obvious differences in the policies of different cities in dealing with migrants. Some cities conduct population diversion, and some cities staged a war of "talent competition".In this context,it is particularly urgent and necessary to study the current population agglomeration in various cities and the impact of population agglomeration in different cities on urban economic growth. The aim of this paper is to study the impact of population agglomeration on urban economic growth.Firstly,a descriptive analysis of China's population agglomeration and urban growth status is carried out.The spatial distribution characteristics of population and economy are analyzed and the trend of population migration is judged by the intensity of population flow.At the same time, the JJD index is used to describe the degree of population and economic agglomeration, and the coupling degree model and unbalanced index are used to discuss the matching degree between population agglomeration and economic agglomeration.Secondly, this paper analyzes the influence mechanism of population agglomeration on urban economic growth from three angles of urbanization, industry and human capital. On this basis, through the empirical model test, this paper discusses the main path of population agglomeration affecting urban economic growth, and compares and analyzes the differences between different regions and cities of different sizes. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows: First, the spatial distributionof population in China is still bounded by Hu Huanyong line. The degree of urban population concentration and the degree of economic agglomeration in China are all decreased according to the order of eastern, central, western and northeast, and the coupling degree between economic agglomeration and population agglomeration is strong.Secondly, population agglomeration mainly affects urban economic growth through urbanization, industrial development and human capital. In this process, population agglomeration will produce positive and negative effects on economic growth.Third, through the empirical test, the inverted "U" curve of population agglomeration and economic growth has been verified,no matter at the national level, the regression results at the regional level(except the eastern region)and the urban size level(excluding small cities)show that the impact of population agglomeration on economic growth presents an inverted "U" feature.Fourth,in the mechanism of the impact of population agglomeration on economic growth, urbanization, industry and human capital play a different role in different regions and cities. The upgrading of industrial structure has promoted the effect of population agglomeration on economic growth in the four regions. The positive adjustment of urbanization level is only obvious in cities central region and big cities. The level of human capital in eastern cities and super-large cities has promoted the effect of population agglomeration on economic growth.Fifthly, the main influencing factors of economic growth in cities with different levels of economic development are different. With the growth of economy, the promoting effect of population density on economic growth is decreasing. The higher the level of urban economic development, the more obvious the effect of human capital and industrial structure on economic growth is.On the other hand, the promoting effect of urbanization level on economic growth is inverted U-type.
