Stimulating consumption is an important way to expand domestic demand.Based on the panel data of 31 provinces or cities in China from 2000 to 2015,the comprehensive evaluation index of population characteristics, income gap and consumption growth in different provinces or cities is obtained by using the method of projection pursuit. The three levels in different regions are compared. Then,we connect the demographic characteristics and the income gap through the coupling coordination degree, and compare the coupling and coordinated degree between the eastern, central and western regions.Secondly,Moran 's I index is used to test the spatial correlation of population characteristics, income gap and consumption growth, and the spatial panel model of consumption growth is established. Finally, the threshold model of the population characteristics as the threshold variable, the income gap as the core independent variable and the consumption growth as the dependent variable is established. The main conclusions of empirical analysis are: there are spatial spillover effects of population characteristics, income gap and consumption growth;population characteristics significantly promotes the growth of consumption;in most areas, the income gap restrains the consumption growth, but in the western region, the income gap promotes the growth of consumption. When the population characteristics level is below 11.784,the income gap inhibits the growth of consumption.Conversely, when the population level is above 11.784,the income gap promotes the consumption growth. When the level of population characteristics is relatively high, the positive effect of income gap on consumption growth is far greater than the negative role of income gap on consumption growth when population characteristics are relatively low.In the end, some suggestions are given according to the conclusion.
