Talents cultivation,scientific research,social service,cultural inheritance and innovation are four basic functions of universities.Since the universities are becoming the center of society and having closer relation with politics,economy and culture,the social service function of universities is more and more important.Local universities serve as the vital booster of local economy and culture development.Therefore,how do the teachers in local universities take part in local development,how is the social service ability of local universities and what system construction and guarantee mechanism can be used to motivate the teachers to take part in social service effectively have important value and practical meaning to both the quality improvement of teachers and the sustainable development of local universities.Based on the systemic collection of articles and data home and abroad and directed by relevant theories,this paper states the essence of the social service of teachers in local universities.It takes Hunan Agricultural University as an example and conducted a questionnaire survey about the social service ability of teachers in this university.Then it analyzes and researches the following aspects: the local universities teachers' understanding of carrying out the social service work;the impact of the local universities;local governments and the cooperation of universities and corporation on the social service of teachers;the channels of social service of teachers in local universities;the effect of social service of teachers in local universities,etc.Based on the distinction of self-demand and realistic-demand in the establishment of local universities teachers social service ability,this paper explores the problems happened in the social service work of teachers in local universities.Finally it presents a solution to these problems according to the influential factors in the social service ability of teachers in local universities.The research shows there are following problems existing in the social service of teachers in local universities: the teachers' weak self-understanding,insufficient emphasis of local universities,the insufficient local government policy,low company identification and interaction,etc.Therefore,the overall social service ability of teachers in local universities should be improved by the change in views of teachers and universities,complete establishment of motivating measures,strengthening the cooperation relation between companies and universities,establishing the special organization to carry out the teachers' social service work and the training in social service ability,etc.
